IN A RECENT GOVERNMENT SURVEY 25% of people say that Christmas makes their mental health worse and 54% of people were worried about the mental health of someone during the festive season. The HAIR BEAUTY industry experiences heightened stress and mental health challenges leading up to the Christmas season, a time often marked by increased workloads and emotional strain. Some key stress factors during this period include: Increased Workload: Professionals in hair and beauty report higher levels of stress due to extended working hours and a surge in bookings on the run up to Christmas Financial and Emotional Strains: Many in this industry are self-employed or run small businesses, facing financial pressures while striving to meet clients' high expectations. This can exacerbate anxiety and lead to burnout, particularly when combined with the industry's historical challenges around mental health support. Over 80% of workers in service-oriented fields including Beauty Therapy have reported mental health challenges linked to stress, especially around the holidays. Some ways you can help protect your mental health this December ✅Set your working hours for this last few weeks before Christmas and stick to them. ❌Don’t allow yourself to be persuaded to fit just one more in. ✅If you are worker longer hours then something has to give, so home tasks and extra shopping may have to be delegated. Remember imperfect action is okay. ✅Eat properly and don’t burn the candle both ends. Plan some proper down time on your day off that includes rest. It is okay to say no to extra activities that wont fill you with joy. I love a good book, everywhere I go my paperwhite kindle comes too 😁 I not only indulge in a good novel while on holiday, but reading is for me something I enjoy everyday and I don't mean just scrolling through stuff and reading on my phone. I like to read a mixture of books to broaden my knowledge and give me some inspiration, plus reading is how I unwind at the end of the day. I would like to share with you a book that I'm reading right now called The lazy guide to happy by Bev Cripps. This book came to my attention as I follow Abigail Horne founder of authors and co publishers. You know a book will great if it has her stamp on it 😊 This book doesn't disappoint. It shines a light on how much, we as people constantly strive for happiness, even feel we need to earn it rather than being grateful for what we have in the moment. This book has made me stop and think, take a step back and reassess how I view my own life. Stress awareness week part 3 🌟 Anxiety is a question, not a prediction. When that feeling of dread creeps in, it’s easy to believe it’s a sign—like something bad is about to happen, or that your gut is warning you about something hidden. This creates a cycle of feeling anxious about being anxious. But here’s the truth: anxiety isn’t a fortune-teller. It’s not predicting what will happen. It’s simply your subconscious asking, “Is this safe?” “What if something goes wrong?” It’s a part of you that’s seeking reassurance, not a hidden truth. Anxiety rarely offers hard facts. Instead, it’s like a worried friend asking questions, looking for guidance. By allowing these thoughts to surface without fearing them, you can often break the cycle of anxiety. Remember, your mind and body work best when they’re rested and nourished. The most resilient version of you is one who’s well-cared-for. So avoid late nights, give your body what it needs, and show your subconscious that you’re looking out for yourself. 🌱✨ Allow your mind the peace it deserves—trust yourself, and let the questions come and go without fear. Be assertive and reassure your subconscious inner child that there are no monsters under the bed, you just have a brilliant imagination. Instead imagine you are going to have the best day and then live it. Keeping with the theme of stress awareness week I want to explore a little more the impact of stress in our lives. 🌪️ Stress and anxiety are often accepted as “normal,” something we hear every day: “I’m going through a stressful time.” But remember, stress isn’t like a hailstorm or a tsunami, something happening to us that we can’t control. Instead, it’s our emotional response to what’s happening around us. Imagine stress as a whirlwind swirling in the air. Even in the stormiest times, there’s always the calm eye of the storm. You can stand there, steady and centered. As the whirlwind spins, you get to choose what you reach out and take as your own. Some things are yours to handle, while others don’t need your energy or attention. If it isn’t yours, or if it’s not the right time, let it pass by. Stress isn’t something that happens to you—it’s something you do. Life won’t always be fair or easy, but don’t add to your burdens by reacting to things beyond your control. 💫It is Stress awareness week. Did you know a lot of the stress we experience in our lives is linked to low self esteem? If you already have low self esteem you are more likely to have a poor coping strategy when faced with difficult situations, may try to avoid rather than tackle people or tasks that you feel are too much for you. 💫Remember, we’re all born confident. Think about a child’s natural curiosity and determination: babies and toddlers learning to walk, talk, and explore the world don’t give up, no matter how many times they fall. As children, we push boundaries, learn through play, and embrace new challenges. However, as adults, some of us may struggle with self-esteem due to past experiences, like feeling unsupported or being bullied. If low self-esteem is causing stress in your life, here are five strategies to help: ⭐1. Separate Yourself from the Past The past doesn’t define who you are today. You’re not the same person you were as a child, teenager, or even a few years ago. People grow, learn, and change with time. Embrace the journey you’re on now, and allow yourself to step into the new, evolved version of yourself. ⭐2. Silence Your Inner Critic Everyone has an inner critic, but that voice doesn’t hold the truth about who you are today. When negative thoughts arise, acknowledge them, then firmly remind yourself that you’re not obligated to accept them. You’re in control of the narrative now. ⭐3. Let Go of Needing External Validation Your worth isn’t tied to others’ opinions. Seeking approval from others can drain your energy and cause unnecessary stress. Remember, critical people often project their insecurities onto others. Focus on building confidence from within and valuing your own perspective. ⭐4. Embrace Authentic Confidence True confidence isn’t about feeling superior; it’s about appreciating your qualities and staying true to yourself. Confidence is resilience in the face of challenges. Keep striving to be your best self, but don’t give up when things get tough. Embrace the process, not perfection. ⭐5. Remember, You’re Your Own Expert No one knows you better than you do. You’ve been through your own unique experiences, challenges, and growth. Reflect on all that you’ve overcome, and celebrate how far you’ve come. You have nothing to prove—just continue on the path of learning to love yourself, because you deserve it. 💫Self-acceptance and inner confidence are lifelong journeys, and with time, patience, and self-care, you’ll grow stronger in dealing with the stresses tied to low self-esteem. Some mornings I wake up inspired, have my best ideas in the shower, only to lose that drive by lunchtime when events of the day have taken over. Chatting with one of my amazing business women friends this week I realised I am not alone in this. You know what to do, but your mind fills with reasons it won’t work or convinces you there’s just no time. By evening, that brilliant plan is a distant memory, set aside for “another day” or even forgotten about entirely. Those roadblocks? They’re mindset barriers—things you can control. Last night we got to go out out. @amylouiseburbridge and I got our glam on and went to the @kentbusinessawards We spent time with some of our favourite industry legends and shared a table with the @sophievdonaldson who many years ago I was privileged to be her teacher and now I'm blessed to call her my friend 💖 Sophie won a gold 🥇in her category and Amy a silver 🥈🎉 They also picked up a couple of bronze awards as did I for Industry trainer of the year 🙂 We met some great people, caught up with old friends and made some new ones too 😁 Being part of an awards evening isn't just about winning, it's being there to support and encourage and motivate each other. We all have an incredible ability to play out scenarios in our minds. Whether it's how tomorrow’s meeting will go, how that big event you've been planning will turn out, or how you'll handle a difficult conversation. Our minds can create entire stories from thin air. But here's the truth: the future isn't real yet. The past has already happened, and we can’t change it. The only thing you can control is the present—what you're doing right now. If you're an overthinker, a worrier, or someone who tends to imagine the worst, you have a gift. You're a natural storyteller with the power to visualize vivid scenarios. Now, it's time to harness that creativity for good. Since the future hasn’t happened, and we can’t predict every moment, worrying about "what ifs" wastes energy. Instead, use your imagination to craft a positive vision—a feel-good movie with a happy ending. By focusing on the best possible outcome, you'll find more peace in the present, enjoying the future you want to see rather than stressing over one that may never happen. Sure, life doesn’t always follow the script we write in our heads. But by visualizing success and hope, you'll appreciate the now, stay optimistic, and avoid burning yourself out over events that haven’t even unfolded. If challenges do arise, you’ll be better prepared to face them, having not spent all your energy on needless catastrophizing. So, when your mind starts spiralling into worst-case scenarios, rewrite the script. Imagine the best-case scenario, and look forward to what could go right. At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect. What were the small victories? Did someone help you with a task? Did you get a few minutes of peace with a cup of tea? Where did our summer go? One minute it's June and we are looking forward to the summer ahead, next you it's autumn schools are back and nights are getting chilly. This year has been a funny year, not just for me, many of you have said the same too. The vibe is different, in business everything can feel a little harder. Having a new government has brought a lot of uncertainty. In the beauty industry we still have the debate are we to see regulations or not, if so what will they eventually be? We are also seeing, with both our learners and clients a more holistic approach to therapies aimed at overall well being not just a quick fix. Those on my coaching programmes are looking for sustained results in both their business and personal lives, realising we can't just paper over the cracks we need to make some permanent changes. Social media is changing, we are fed up with scrolling and I hate the @everyone tag. We are all becoming more discerning, unfollowing those that annoy rather than bring value or joy to our day. This year for me has been so varied, trying out new things and visiting new places. I won't say stepping out of my comfort zone, because I truly believe no one has a permanent comfort zone with clearly defined edges. But I will admit to trying new things that my inner critic would have said "that won't work for you" and I have proved that my comfort zone can be expanded, even changed. I truly believe it is never too late to change career, pivot your current business or move on from that which no longer serves you. Change may be scary but so is be stuck and never reaching your true potential. So what changes do you need to make before the year end? We have hit that time of year again, summer is coming to an end, a new school year is starting and it feels like it's all change again. September is the traditional start of the academic year. Even for those of us without kids or whose children have flown the nest, we have the academic year ingrained in us since childhood.
